Restaurante O Tarro
O Tarro opened on January 1, 1969 — not as a restaurant, but as a service area beside a gas station on the banks of the river Mira. The family bought the place in the 1980s, and in 2003 António, the family's son, came back to renovate and expand it, giving it the shape that makes it today one of Odemira's fixed points.
More than half a century on, it is a landmark of Alentejo cooking: from the celebrated sopa de cação (dogfish soup) to sole in almond sauce, from ensopado de borrego (lamb stew) to borrego à Tarro, not forgetting the meat cataplana — cooked in the traditional copper pan — and the Limousin veal steak. The desserts still follow the recipes of António's mother (honey pudding, pudim alentejano, almond tart), a family flavor carried down through generations.
It also works as a café and pastry shop, with a wide riverside terrace, and is a daily meeting place for the people of Odemira and a must-stop for anyone visiting.
